Hello! I just found this community. My specific anxiety disorder is called Selective Mutism. I wrote a piece about it for FWD. Here is the Wikipedia page.

I'm happy to answer questions and discuss selective mutism if anyone wants to.

Thank you for linking to that peace you wrote.

I found it very interesting, er....I hope you know I mean that in a respectful fashion. It gave me a new perspective.

Also, I wanted to welcome you to the community.

Thank you so much for posting this. I've been sat here crying for a good five minutes after reading your FWD piece and the comments on it, out of the relief of knowing this is An Actual Thing.

I was a very shy child, and a bit of a loner, so there were plenty of people I was uncomfortable talking to/with/around. Even up through college, I often had to have someone order for me at restaurants because I couldn't speak to the waitstaff. Thankfully, it seems to have died down significantly as I've aged, only occasionally flaring up.

The most current--and worst--experience of SM I've had was actually when I tried anxiety therapy for the first time, last year. I didn't click at all with the counselor I was referred to. Half the questions he asked, I simply could not answer. He would ask something, I would want to answer it, but my brain would go utterly blank.

I couldn't articulate why I couldn't answer, either, and I ended the session early because I was just sitting there crying while he kept asking questions I couldn't respond to. It put me off therapy pretty thoroughly; I've never gone back or tried to find a different therapist.

Now, I at least know that this could be an aspect of my GAD, and if I attempt therapy again, this could make a real difference.

Thank you for this. I've had problems with this my whole life and never knew there was a name for it!
